New to Online Marketing?
Even though the jargon of web (SEO, PPC, SEM, CPC, CPA, CTR bla bla bla...)can often be intimidating and the internet itself might also appear to change faster than some people change their hair-do. The fundamentals of the web are still more or less the same as they were years ago. In my view, it's still the mix of four essential factors:
1). The product / service you sell.
2). The market to which you sell it to.
3). Your website.
4). The quality and quantity of the traffic that comes to it.
Essentially this means that if you have a good to superior product which you sell to a hungry market (that has money to pay for it), a site that converts well, and you are able to drive a lot of qualified traffic to your site, then you should be fine. Everything else are just the means of either achieving these aims or excelling at them.
If you ask me to rank these in importance, I would first place the traffic. No matter what you sell, how hungry the market is and how great your website looks, if there is no one coming to visit it, then all of this is essentially worthless. Conversely, I had seen weak products, sold on weak markets by ugly, difficult to navigate websites, actually do well. Its like having a store on the corner of the most busy street in Tokyo with no rent to pay. No matter what you sell (well, almost), you are bound to make a profit simply because of the numbers.
These fundamentals are pretty easy to grasp aren’t they? However, since the 90s the competition for exposure on the web has grown by leaps and bounds. Subsequently, today there are many more websites than there are people. If traffic was to be distributed evenly, all sites would average about 0.2 clicks a day. This is where the technical aspect of the web is necessary. It is necessary (again, in my view) for you as a business owner to at least have some idea of SEO or PPC and other online marketing tools. Why? Because, if you don’t and are planning to outsource your online marketing to a third party, you are basically saying: “Here is my money. Now, please hurt me.”
I guess there are also different levels of being “new to online marketing.” There is a level at which you do not know it but you are operating a real business and have real sales online. Somehow it just happened. This is the best level to start from and many of my clients have successfully multiplied their results from what they were. Another level is that you have a site but haven’t made any sales online up to date. If you are small (i.e. you do not own a business) then, I am sorry to say, you are a favorite pray of freelance online marketers, and SEO experts. If you actually own a business and make money – just not online – and would like to move to the online world then you are, I am sorry to say (again), a favorite pray for the online agencies. Trust me. I had seen this happen time and time again. The internet is one place full of empty promises.
